Lacrosse is a fast-paced and highly technical sport.
If you’re just learning how to play the game, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by all of the different skills you have to learn.
Luckily, there are plenty of ways to practice lacrosse… even if you don’t have access to an official field!
Here are some backyard lacrosse drills that will help build core lacrosse skills while also having fun outside this summer:
1. Shooting practice with your goalie (or wall).
Set up a net directly in front of you, with the goalie (or wall) on your right side.
Without your stick in hand, take 10 shots at the net without letting the ball touch any part of your body and without using your feet.
If you miss, try again until you hit 10 times.
Then switch roles and have your partner do the same thing from their position.
Repeat this at least three times per week for maximum results!
2. Backyard stick tricks
A few things to keep in mind while practicing your backyard stick tricks:
- Use a stick with a ball attached to it.This will make catching and throwing much easier, as well as other drills like dribbling, shooting and passing.
If you’re using an official lacrosse stick, great!
If not, try using something like this or this (but not these).
- Practice catching and throwing the ball back and forth between yourself and your teammate(s) until you have mastered it.When trying to catch the ball with one hand, remember to use the same hand for both catching and throwing—it will help with accuracy later on!
Remember how long each drill should take before moving on from here so that everyone has enough time together before practice ends.
- Practice dribbling under pressure from defenders who are trying their best to steal away possession from me/you/us–and don’t forget about those fancy footwork moves either! It’s important that every player knows how do handle themselves around other players who are looking for any opportunity possible (like stealing away my/your/our possessions) because there is nothing worse than getting caught off guard during an important play.*
3. Use a rebounder and cones to challenge yourself with dodging and shooting from different angles
If you want to get better at stick skills, but don’t have access to a rebounder, you can use cones instead.
Cones are great tools that can help you practice different types of shots.
To challenge yourself with dodging and shooting from different angles:
- Set up the cone(s) in an X formation on your lawn or driveway
- Face one end of your makeshift goal (a cone) and take a shot at it by aiming off-center towards one side of the net
- Try not to let any ball go through!
4. Practice catching while on the run and in motion
- Get a ball machine.
- Practice catching while on the run and in motion.
- Try catching while moving laterally, diagonally, backwards, forwards or to the left.
Building core lacrosse skills is easy when you’re committed to putting in the work
There’s no shortcut to success. You can’t expect to be good at lacrosse without putting in the work.
Stay focused on your goals and not give up when things get difficult.
It’s important that you stay positive, motivated and healthy while practicing this summer so that you can keep improving!
So, if you’re a lacrosse player who wants to get better at their craft, then these backyard drills are for you!
But don’t forget that the most important thing is to just have fun with them.
If you can find enjoyment in practicing your skills, then it might not even seem like work at all.
And of course, don’t be afraid to experiment and tweak things until they feel just right!
